What is a SIM Only deal?

A SIM Only contract is just that. No phone or tablet, just a SIM card with all the data, minutes and texts you need. Pick a Pay Monthly SIM or Pay As You Go SIM plan that suits you. We’ve got Pay Monthly phone contracts ranging from 1GB a month to Unlimited Data SIM cards. You get extra flexibility with Pay Monthly, because you can join us on a 1, 12 or 24-month plan. And if you choose Pay As You Go there’s no upfront cost.

How does SIM Only work on Three?

With a physical SIM, when it arrives, put it in your phone, and you’ll automatically get a text confirming that you’ve connected to Three. You’ll be ready to go in no time. The process for eSIM is even faster.

Switch to Three and keep your number

Frequently asked questions

A Data SIM works the same way as a phone SIM, but it will connect your tablet or other Mobile Broadband device to the internet through our network. We’ve got a whole host of Data SIM plans, from Unlimited Data SIM Only plans to Pay As You Go Data SIMs with no contract.

Yes, you can. It’s easy to do it online, or even via text. Just let us know your PAC code from your previous provider. Find out all you need to know about switching to Three.

If you're currently using a Pay As You Go SIM, then you'll be able to leave at any time. If you're on one of our Pay Monthly SIM Only contracts, then you'll be able to cancel when that contract is up for renewal. The Pay Monthly SIM Only contracts last 1, 12 or 24 months.

Yes, with SIM Only you can still use all your favourite web messaging services, like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Any data use will come out of your SIM plan allowance.

Yes, with a Three SIM you'll be able to use your device abroad. The process for activating Go Roam for your Three SIM differs slightly for Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go plans. You can find out more on our Go Roam page.

If you already have a contract with Three that includes a handset, you’ll automatically be on a SIM Only contract once your handset is paid off. 

Don’t have a contract of any sorts with Three? Getting a SIM Only plan is easy. You can either get a SIM Only plan with a new number or you can choose to port your current number to your new Three SIM.  

As well as Pay As You Go SIM deals, Three offers 30-day, 12 and 24-month contracts on SIM Only. 

If you're getting a SIM card for your tablet, you'll probably need a Nano SIM – it's the most used SIM in smartphones and tablets today. If you're not sure which SIM you need, you’ll be able to find these details in the specs of the device you already have or would like to buy.

Have a handset you bought through another network? Providing your Three SIM card is the right size for your phone, and your phone has been unlocked, then it should work just fine. 

Activating your physical. Three SIM is simple.

Follow these steps to activate your SIM:

  1. Insert your SIM into your phone and switch it on.

  2. We'll text you to let you know we've begun activating your SIM.

  3. We'll then send you a second text telling you to turn your phone off and on again.

  4. Your SIM will be activated when you restart your phone.

Instead of having to insert a physical SIM card, with eSIM we’ll give you a QR code which you can scan to activate your eSIM. Once activated, it will work in the same way as a traditional SIM, allowing you to browse the internet or take calls via the Three network.

To be able to use 5g you’ll need a 5g compatible SIM card. All new SIMs that Three issues are 5g compatible.  

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM built into devices that allows you to activate a plan without having to use a physical SIM. You can install multiple eSIMs and use two phone numbers at the same time.

Dual SIM models allow you to use two SIM cards in one device. This is useful if you have different phone numbers for work and home. It’s great for travelling too, for example if you’d like to use a local number while keeping your original number active when abroad.

If you’d like to be able to access the internet on the go, without having to connect to WiFi, then you’ll need to have a Data SIM card inserted in your tablet. 

SIM cards come in a variety of sizes but the most common today is the Nano SIM which is used by most newer model tablets and mobile devices.

Three offers Go Roam to both SIM Only customers and SIM and device plan customers. 

Daily roaming charges

Unless stated otherwise, there’s a daily roaming charge to unlock your UK allowance for 24 hours in Go Roam destinations. You'll be charged as soon as you use any of your plan's allowances in a Go Roam destination.

If you’re on Pay As You Go, or your Pay Monthly plan started before 1 October 2021, these charges won’t apply. Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man are excluded from the daily charge. Fair use policies apply in Go Roam destinations, check out our FAQs for more info.

    Each April, your monthly charge will increase by the previous December's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate, plus 3.9%.
