Introducing the new Google Pixel 8 Series

At the #MadeByGoogle event on 4 October 2023, Google introduced us to the new Google Pixel phones; the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. These hotly anticipated phones are Google’s best yet, showcasing a huge range of first-of-their-kind features and a beautiful new design.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Google Pixel 8 series.

Both new Pixel phones have a new, refined design. Sporting smooth curves and a soft, natural range of colours – they look beautiful and fit nicely in your hand.

Pixel 8 is the smaller of the 2, coming in at 6.2in, and the Pixel 8 Pro is 6.7in. 

Made from recycled materials, including 100% recycled aluminium casings, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are made to last.

These aren’t phones you have to replace every year – as for the first time ever, Google’s extended Pixel support to 7 years. That means you get OS updates, security updates, Feature Drops, and AI innovations for 7 years. Something unique to Google.

Turn the Pixel 8 Pro over, and not only will you see the impressive triple rear camera setup, you’ll see a new temperature sensor. That’s right. You can now use your Google Pixel 8 Pro to check the temperature of everything from a pan on the hob to your baby’s bottle.

Google’s even applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to get the Pixel 8 Pro’s thermometer approved to take readings of human skin.

The new Actua display on Pixel 8 is 42% brighter than Pixel 7 with 2000 nits peak brightness. It gives everything you view on your phone, from video and photos to games, brilliant, true-to-life clarity.

And the adaptive refresh rate of 60-120Hz makes everything you do on your phone as smooth as you like.

The Pixel 8 Pro takes it to the next level with the new Super Actua display. With a hugely impressive peak brightness of 2400 nits, it’s Google’s brightest display yet. And the variable refresh rate intelligently adjusts from 1-120Hz for silky smooth scrolling, streaming, and gaming. 

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the first phones to use Google’s new Tensor G3 chip – its most powerful chip yet. Custom-designed with Google AI, it makes both phones super-fast and efficient.  

The Pixel 8 camera set-up has had a full upgrade. It combines Google AI and Tensor G3 with the ultrawide and new wide camera to credit 2x optical quality images. So, you get vivid colours and striking details in any light.

Pixel 8 now has Macro Focus, too, so you can take incredible photos of even the smallest subjects.

Another first from Google, Audio Magic Eraser, uses advanced machine learning models to put the sounds captured in your video into separate layers. Dial them up or down as you please to perfect your video. 

Another exciting feature in the camera app is Best Take.

Perfect for group shots – because there’s always someone who blinks or isn’t happy with their smile or preferred the shot before.

Best Take lets you get everyone’s best side with no blinking in sight. It uses a series of photos taken close together to help you create the shot you want. Pick and choose the best expression for everyone in the photo and seamlessly update the shot. 

This new feature lets you use your imagination to edit your photos with generative AI. Tap or circle a subject or object to re-size or move it around, or even delete it completely.

This makes the camera more accessible and helps people with vision impairment get the perfect photo. It now works on both the front and rear cameras and recognises everything from people and pets to documents. 

The Pixel 8 Pro camera has all of the features mentioned earlier and more.

The triple rear camera has been completely upgraded. The new 50MP main sensor has 21% more light sensitivity for better low-light performance. The 48MP ultrawide lens is bigger for improved Macro Focus. And the 48MP telephoto lens has been upgraded to capture 56% more light and takes photos with 10x more optical quality.

Combine those hardware upgrades with advanced Google AI, and you get an incredibly powerful camera system.
