Google Pixel 8 vs Pixel 7 – What’s new?

October saw the launch of the new Pixel 8 – packed with upgrades and innovative new features. It’s powerful and super-helpful, but how does it compare with Pixel 7?

Which one should you go for? We’ve compared Pixel 8 and 7 to see which one’s right for you. 

First up, the most obvious difference between Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 is the size. Pixel 7 is 6.3in, and Pixel 8 is more compact at 6.2in. Overall, the design is relatively similar, with a polished glass back with a horizontal camera bar. 

Last year, Pixel 7 came in 3 different colours: obsidian, snow, and lemongrass. And this year, Google’s expanded the range of Pixel 8 colours with obsidian, rose, hazel, mint, and coral. 

Next, let’s compare the Pixel 7 and 8 displays.

The new Actua display on the Pixel 8 is twice as bright as the Pixel 7’s FHD+ smooth display. And it has a higher adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz compared to 90Hz on the Pixel 7. That means scrolling, streaming, and gaming are much smoother and more responsive on Pixel 8. 

Pixel 7’s 4355mAh battery boasted all-day power, but Pixel 8 goes further with its larger 4575mAh battery. It lasts over 24 hours, and both can be boosted to 72 hours battery life if you switch Extreme Battery Saver on.  

Pixel phones are known for their excellent cameras and Pixel 7’s no exception. Its dual rear camera is made up of a 50MP wide lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens and delivers incredible photos.

But Pixel 8 takes things up a notch.

The 50MP wide and 12MP ultrawide dual rear camera has had a complete upgrade. Add Google AI and Tensor G3 to that upgraded hardware, and you get better low-light shots and 2x optical quality images. Pixel 8 now has Macro Focus, too, so you can take incredible shots of even the smallest subjects.  

Pixel 8 video’s been revamped too. The upgraded main sensor and Tensor G3 have improved low-light video with faster auto-focus, better dynamic range and shadow noise.  

Pixel 7 has the Tensor G2 processor for high performance and excellent multi-tasking power with Google’s intuitive AI.
